Checkups and cleanings
These procedures are important to make sure your child has a healthy mouth. We recommend seeing your dentist every 6 months so that we can work together on making sure we keep your child cavity free with a healthy smile! Seeing your child every six months will ensure we catch the cavities before they get a chance to get larger. It can also help us prevent future issues! The checkup will give both you and your child a chance to have questions answered and we can help with recommending certain products based on your child’s needs.
The cleaning is done with a special “toothbrush” that will take off plaque and tartar on teeth. We have many toothpaste options that your child will be able to choose from. After the cleaning, the doctor will perform an exam and address your child’s individual needs.
Radiographs
Radiographs or xrays are pictures we take of your child’s teeth. We follow the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommendations to determine the frequency that we take the x-rays. Many times, x-rays will help us catch those flossing cavities between the teeth! The x-rays will also help us evaluate the teeth and make sure those baby and adult teeth are looking healthy.
Our office incorporates some of the latest technologies when it comes to digital radiographs so you can rest assured that your child’s exposure to radiation is minimal.
Fluoride
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that is sometimes added to water sources and many toothpastes. It is a vitamin that helps keep teeth strong and helps to prevent cavities from forming. It is very quick to apply and we allow your child to pick the flavor they would like. With the fluoride we use at our office, your child can still eat and drink right after!
Sportsguard
Did you know that most sports-related injuries are related to the teeth and gums? At Firefly, we are dedicated to your child’s smile. We can help prevent this by fabricating a custom made sportsguard that is more comfortable and better fitting than what can be found in stores. The sportsguard will help protect your child’s teeth by preventing chips or knocked out teeth. Sportsguard are especially important for contact sports but are also recommended for noncontact sports.
Sealants
Many times, our molars especially those back ones have very deep grooves where bacteria and food can get stuck and cause cavities. Sealants are applied to the chewing surface of a tooth to help prevent the bacteria and food from sticking to the grooves. They only take a couple of minutes and they really decrease the chance that decay will form on those teeth. Call our office today to schedule an appointment for your child! ”

We offer different sedation options to help keep your child calm and relaxed
At Firefly Children’s Dentistry we understand that every child has unique needs. For that reason, we may offer treatment with different forms of sedation to make sure your child has the most comfortable experience. Call today to schedule your appointment!
Nitrous/Laughing Gas
Nitrous/Laughing gas is a treatment adjunct that we use frequently here at Firefly. It is one of the safest sedatives with few side affects. Laughing gas will help your child relax, be calmer and overall have a more pleasant experience. Children who receive laughing gas will still be alert, awake and able to communicate with us. Laughing gas will not put your child to sleep. The effects of the gas wear off almost immediately once it is turned off. We recommend staying away from heavy foods prior to having laughing gas.
General Anesthesia
Sometimes, for the comfort and safety of your child our doctor may recommend that dental work be completed under general anesthesia. Sedation may be a good option for children with severe anxiety, extensive treatment and/or children with complex medical needs. Whatever the reason, we got you covered. Under general anesthesia, we complete all the necessary work for your child during one visit while they are sleeping. General anesthesia is performed in hospital setting under the close supervision of anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists.

Crowns
There are several reasons why a tooth may need a crown: extensive decay, deformities in the enamel or outer tooth layer, a traumatic injury to the tooth or after nerve/pulpal treatment. A crown can help protect and maintain the tooth until the tooth is ready to naturally come out. At Firefly Children’s Dentistry we offer a variety of options including stainless steel crowns and Zirconia tooth colored crowns. In fact, our doctor is a certified provider for Sprig zirconia crowns.
Tooth colored fillings
If your child needs a filling, Firefly Children’s Dentistry has you covered. All the fillings that we do at our office are tooth colored and we try our best to make sure we use a shade that matches that of your child’s teeth. We use these fillings because they are most esthetic and will practically be invisible to the naked eye. Call our office today to schedule your child’s appointment!
Silver Diamine Fluoride
Silver Diamine Fluoride, or SDF, is a way to stop a cavity from getting larger without having to use traditional methods of removing the decay and then placing a filling. We apply the SDF as a“paint” on top of the teeth. It is used as an alternative treatment to stop progression of decay until the child is better able to sit for treatment in office. It is a safe, non-invasive method and can sometimes allow us to avoid sedation or general anesthesia. Come in today to find out if this is an option for your child!
Space Maintainers/Spacers
One of the most important functions of a baby teeth is to guide and hold space for permanent teeth until they are ready to come in. If a baby molar is lost prematurely, in order to prevent other teeth from drifting and closing the space, a spacer may be indicated. Most times, we can fabricate the spacer chairside at one appointment. At every 6 month cleaning, we will monitor the eruption of the permanent teeth and remove the spacer once we see the adult tooth coming in. Removing the spacer is a fairly simple procedure. Remember, with spacers you always want to avoid any kind of sticky or chewy candies.
Extractions
At Firefly, we are dedicated to making sure your child has a healthy smile. Sometimes that means that an extraction may be indicated if we are faced with a problematic tooth or a tooth that is blocking the eruption of permanent teeth. Other times, the orthodontist may need to have teeth extracted to help make space. Whatever the reason, we will work to make sure that the appointment is as comfortable as can be for your child. With most kids, we will use laughing gas to help relax the child during treatment.
Pulp/Nerve therapy
When decay is extensive it could reach the innermost layer of the tooth, the nerve. If this happens, we need to treat the nerve of the tooth. However, this procedure is a lot simpler and faster than it sounds. Once we remove the decay, we will complete a deep cleaning on the tooth. Most likely, after a tooth receives pulp therapy it will need a crown. With most kids, we will use laughing gas to help relax the child during treatment. ”

After hours emergency calls will be directed to an emergency number.
Here are some common dental emergencies:
Toothaches

With permanent teeth that have been knocked out, time is of essence. The sooner we can appropriately treat the tooth the more likely we can save the tooth in the future. Give our office a call immediately at 419-401-7171
1. Touch the tooth only by the crown [top portion]. Do not touch the root portion.
2. Rinse the tooth carefully with water and try to place the tooth back into the socket. Hold the tooth in place by carefully biting on some gauze or a clean towel. Proceed to our office or the nearest emergency room for immediate treatment
3. If you cannot place the tooth back into the socket, place it in milk and proceed to our office for immediate care or the nearest hospital
Baby Tooth has been knocked out
1. Locate the tooth
2. Apply gauze and pressure for about 10 minutes to stop or minimize bleeding
3. Give our office a call at 419-401-7171.
4. We do not replant baby teeth as it could cause permanent damage to the adult teeth. However, an exam is always recommended to evaluate the area and ensure the other teeth and surrounding bone are not damaged
Object stuck between teeth
1. Attempt to dislodge object with floss
