“Dr. Jim Youssef joined Durango Orthopedics in June 1997, and founded Spine Colorado.
Dr. Youssef is a board certified, fellowship-trained spine surgeon, the highest level of training for a spine surgeon in the United States. He specializes in minimally invasive spine surgery, fracture care, complex spinal disorders and alternatives to bony fusion in spine surgery.
Dr. Youssef completed his undergraduate degree in Genetics at the University of California at Berkeley in 1986, and earned his medical degree in 1991 at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine. He completed his internship in general surgery at Oregon Health Sciences University in 1992 and his residency in orthopedic surgery at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in 1996. His did his fellowship in spine surgery at the University of California, Davis Medical Center in 1997.
In addition to his busy clinical practice, Dr. Youssef oversees an active research department. He has participated in multiple IDE/FDA clinical trials and has published his research in over 25 peer-reviewed publications. Through his research activity, Dr. Youssef is involved in the newest surgical technologies, allowing him to offer his patients the most cutting edge treatments available. Dr. Youssef is a member of the Cervical Spine Research Society, American Orthopaedic Association, North American Spine Society, Lumbar Spine Research Society, Society of Lateral Access Surgery (President), Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (Founding Member) and other national spine and orthopaedic societies.
Dr. Youssef is an editor for several peer-reviewed journals, and is the author of several book chapters published in medical textbooks. He is co-founder of the Evidence & Technology Spine Summit, a Continuing Medical Education conference attended by spine surgeons from around the world. He is frequently invited to lecture at conferences on spine health care across the United States, and teaches spine surgery techniques both nationally and internationally.

“Dr. Douglas Orndorff joined Spine Colorado in August 2009
Dr. Orndorff is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon. His special interests include motion preservation surgery, cervical and lumbar degenerative and trauma conditions, spinal deformity and the treatment of spinal tumors. Dr. Orndorff completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Denver. He earned his medical degree at the University of Colorado, School of Medicine. Dr. Orndorff completed his internship in General Surgery and his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Virginia. He completed a fellowship in spine surgery at the University of Wisconsin.
Dr. Orndorff’s professional objectives are to practice comprehensive orthopaedic and spinal surgery within the Four Corners community and to be actively involved in academic research and education. He serves as the Department of Surgery Chairman at Mercy Regional Hospital, since 2014.
Dr. Orndorff is a member of the North American Spine Society, Cervical Spine Society, Lumbar Research Society, Minimally Invasive Spine Society, the AO/ASIF International Spine Society and a Member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery.

“Dr. Amir Abtahi joined spine Colorado in August 2016 and is a board eligible spine surgeon.
Dr. Abtahi has a special interest in minimally invasive spine surgery, motion preservation surgery, and spinal deformity surgery. He treats all spinal conditions including cervical, thoracic, and lumbar degenerative diseases, scoliosis, spine trauma, as well as tumors and infections of the spine. Dr. Abtahi completed his undergraduate education at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and earned his medical degree from the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, Tennessee. He completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Utah Medical Center and his fellowship in Spine Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Abtahi is active in clinical research. He has published his research in numerous peer-reviewed publications and presented his research at several national and international spine meetings. “Dr. Cyril Bohachevsky joined Spine Colorado in April 2000.
Dr. Bohachevsky is a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician at Spine Colorado. He focuses 100% on a non-surgical treatment of back and neck pain. Dr. Bohachevsky received his undergraduate degree from Texas A&M University and his doctor of medicine from University of Texas Medical School. His internship was completed at University of Texas Medical School. Dr. Bohachevsky completed his residency in rehabilitation medicine at University of Colorado Health Science Center. Dr. Bohachevsky is skilled in cervical, thoracic and lumbar epidural and facet injections as well as radiofrequency neurotomy and regenerative medicine treatment of the spine.
Dr. Bohachevsky is board certified and a member of American Academy of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, a member of Spinal Intervention Society (SIS), the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians (ASIPP) and Alpha Omega Alpha. “Dr. Jim Santos joined Spine Colorado in June 2015.
Dr. Santos is a board-certified Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation physician. He focuses his practice in the restoration of function and nonsurgical management of back and neck pain. Dr. Santos engages his patients to participate in treatment decisions and long-term recovery and pain prevention through a combination of diet, exercise and education. While Dr. Santos is proficient in the use of interventional spinal injections and procedures for diagnostic and therapeutic benefit, he uses such techniques only to facilitate the transition of the patient regaining control over his or her condition. He is also able to perform electrodiagnostic studies for the diagnosis of nerve and muscle disorders.
Dr. Santos received his bachelor’s degree in biology at the University of Texas in 1985, and went on to received a Doctorate of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) in 1990, before continuing his education and earning his medical degree (M.D.) in 1994 at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. During his proud service to our country in the United States Navy, Dr. Santos counts among his many achievements an internship in internal medicine at the Naval Medical Center in Oakland, California, becoming an Undersea Medical Officer and a certified U.S. Navy diver. As a lieutenant commander, Dr. Santos served as the Department Head of the Naval Branch Health Clinic in Portsmouth, New Hampshire from 1996 to 1998. “Mr. Lance Hamlin joined Spine Colorado as a Physician Assistant in August 2005. His professional interests include complex spine surgery, minimally invasive approaches to the spine and deformity correction.
Mr. Hamlin received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He then attended PA school at Saint Louis University. He is certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
The first five years of Mr. Hamlin’s career were spent in Billings, MT assisting in neurosurgical procedures. He arrived in Durango in 2005 and has assisted in both spinal and trauma surgeries since that time. Mr. Hamlin is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants and the Colorado Association of Physician Assistants.

“Ms. Kim Byrd joined Spine Colorado as a Physician Assistant in December 2016.
Ms. Byrd attended Eastern New Mexico University where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Chemistry and emphasis in Biomedical Science. She received her Masters of Physician Assistant Studies at the University of New Mexico. She is certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants and is licensed in both Colorado and New Mexico.
Ms. Byrd began her career with the University of New Mexico Cancer Center where she aided in the outpatient management of surgical patients with gastrointestinal, breast, and skin/soft tissue cancers. She then transitioned to the Plastic, Burn and Reconstructive Surgery department where she served as a surgical First Assist on cases involving breast reconstruction, limb salvage via local and free tissue transfer utilizing microsurgical techniques, debridement and skin grafting of burns, maxillofacial traumas, and a wide variety of cosmetic procedures.
Kim comes from an active/adventurous family and will rarely be found idle. She enjoys a multitude of activities such as bodybuilding, snowboarding, yoga, hunting/fishing, riding her motorcycle, and travel.”
