For Dr. Onugha:
Osita Onugha, M.D., is a board-certified surgeon and assistant professor of thoracic surgery at the John Wayne Cancer Institute. Dr. Onugha practices all aspects of thoracic surgery, including procedures for benign and malignant conditions of the lung, esophagus and mediastinum. He has a particular interest in minimally invasive techniques that leave small scars, and has extensive experience in treating thoracic surgical conditions using video-assisted thoracoscopic surgical (VATS), robotic assisted thoracic surgery (RATS), laparoscopic and bronchoscopic approaches.
While in training, Dr. Onugha became the first cardiothoracic fellow to be awarded the prestigious Excellence in Teaching with Humanism Fellow and Residents Award. During his residency at Stanford, he helped design a novel catheter that detects and treats infections. He was a named inventor on multiple invention disclosures and has two filed patents.
He is the creator of the Surgical Innovation Lab at the John Wayne Cancer Institute. Its current projects include: using 3D printing for chest wall reconstruction after surgical resection, using wearable technology as a diagnostic preoperative/postoperative tool, using machine learning to better understand lung cancer, and studying the uses of novel circulating tumor DNA (liquid biopsy) in lung cancer.
Dr. Onugha holds an MBA from the University of Cambridge Judge Business School in England.
He has co-authored several book chapters and manuscripts, and has presented at multiple national conferences.
Dr. Onugha is also involved in clinical trials for patients in all stages of lung and esophageal cancer.

For Dr. McKenna:
Robert McKenna, M.D., is a board-certified thoracic surgeon who pioneered minimally invasive lung cancer surgery. He has taught many thoracic surgeons around the world how to perform this surgery. With nearly 30 years of experience, Dr. McKenna is well-respected in the medical community for his clinical and research contributions. Prior to joining Providence Medical Institute, Dr. McKenna served as clinical chief of general thoracic surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
Dr. McKenna has been included on the America’s Top Doctors for Cancer list for thoracic surgery for 10 consecutive years. He has published more than 250 peer-reviewed articles and has authored two books and 48 book chapters on topics related to his specialty. Dr. McKenna has presented his research findings to both national and international audiences. He is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the American Association for Thoracic Surgery.
